Project Liberia

Born from one woman’s passion to help her fellow Liberians, Project Liberia is a collection of individual programs that aim to heal a nation torn apart by civil war. Each venture has been developed to enhance the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual fiber of the people of Liberia.

Our undertakings:

Gbapa Community Center — Villages serve as the basic unit of government and social life for Liberians. Gbapa is a small inland village of about 6,000 people. The Gbapa Community Center will serve as a community hub, providing a gathering place for young and old alike. What we need: Monetary contributions for building materials. Computers, books, school and medical supplies.

Sports for Africa — In a nation where individuals once fought against each other, working in teams is imperative to uniting a nation. Sports Teams encourages physical activity and allows young people to see each other as teammates while simply enjoying their youth. What we need: Donations of gently used soccer and basketball equipment.

Monrovia Landscape Initiative — As the capital city, Monrovia was the site of numer- ous military conflicts during the civil war. The remnants of these conflicts remain visible throughout the city. Rubbish, bullet shells and bombed areas are constant reminders of conflict and chaos. The Monrovia Landscape Initiative will remove debris and restore the natural environment. What we need: Monetary contributions for truck and land. Garbage bags.

Micro-Loans Program — Microfinance, giving small loans to individuals to start self-employment ventures, has a proven track record of effectiveness. A mere $20 is all it takes to give one Liberian the opportunity to start his or her own business. The Micro-Loans Program allows individuals to obtain small loans, earn credit and build the foundation for a better life. What we need: Monetary contributions.

Jobs for Liberians — Just four years ago, it was reported that nearly 40 percent of people living in war torn nations live on less than $1 a day. Poverty is pervasive throughout Liberia. Economic development is essential to the long-term stability of the country. Small companies started by Project Liberia serve as a beginning for larger endeavors. Already workers are farming land as well as operating a resale business. Together, both ventures employ 16 Liberians. What we need: Monetary contributions for wages. Non-electrical farm equipment. Donations for a resale store, primarily gently used adult and children’s shoes.
